The hex grid looks quite pleasant, closer resemblance to boardgames like 'the settlers of catan'. As for the rest; I've played and enjoyed 2008's watered down xbox 360 version of Civilization, I would like to think that things can only improve (it's still being made by Firaxis Games...).
Haven't heard of any patches so we're stuck with the v3.13patch for beyond the sword as it stands.
Ultimately I think we're glossing over the most important piece of news! Civilization Network, a Civ game developed for facebook-- the world will never be the same (queue in dramatic drum beats).
